Cornerstone Comeback Grant Program Makes Investing in Southfield Easier
Share
The Southfield Downtown Development Authority introduces a new initiative to help businesses and property owners invest in the Historic Cornerstone District.
Opening a business. Renovating a commercial building. Preparing a vacant storefront for a new tenant.
Each represents an investment in Southfield’s future—but each also comes with challenges. Permits, inspections, occupancy requirements, construction costs, and project coordination can make even straightforward improvements feel overwhelming.
The Southfield Downtown Development Authority (SDDA) created the Cornerstone Comeback Grant Program to help make those investments easier.
Designed to encourage redevelopment, business growth, and property improvements, the program combines three grant opportunities into one application while providing professional guidance to help applicants navigate the development process. The goal is simple: reduce barriers to investment while strengthening Southfield’s Historic Cornerstone District.
Building Momentum
The Cornerstone District is experiencing significant transformation.
Recent years have brought more than $50 million in private investment, more than $5.3 million in public infrastructure improvements, continued redevelopment of Northland City Center, and ongoing investment from healthcare, education, and private employers.
The Cornerstone Comeback Grant Program allows businesses and property owners to become part of that momentum.
Every occupied storefront, renovated façade, and improved commercial property contributes to a district that is more attractive, more connected, and more competitive.
Three Ways to Invest
The Cornerstone Comeback Grant Program includes three distinct opportunities designed to support different types of investment.
Cornerstone Comeback Business Opening Grant
Available throughout the Historic Cornerstone District, this grant assists businesses opening, expanding, relocating within the district, or preparing commercial space for occupancy.
Applicants may receive reimbursement for eligible occupancy-related expenses while also benefiting from guidance provided by SDDA Grant Committee members to help navigate the Certificate of Occupancy process.
Cornerstone Curb Appeal Facade Improvement Grant
Available for eligible properties in the Northland Park area, this grant supports exterior improvements that strengthen curb appeal, improve commercial corridors, and encourage reinvestment.
Mid-Century Modern Address Numeral Grant
Also available for eligible Northland Park properties, this grant encourages architecturally compatible address numerals that improve visibility while reinforcing the district’s Mid-Century Modern identity.
More Than a Grant Program
The Cornerstone Comeback Grant Program reflects the SDDA’s commitment to helping businesses and property owners succeed.
Rather than simply offering financial assistance, the program provides guidance, connections, and resources that help applicants move projects forward with greater confidence.
Every successful project contributes to a stronger Historic Cornerstone District—one that attracts investment, supports local businesses, and creates new opportunities for future growth.
