SDDA Board Recommends Development Liquor License for Brix Wine

The Southfield Downtown Development Authority (SDDA) Board of Directors unanimously voted to recommend approval of a Development Liquor License for Brix Wine, a Detroit-based wine bar and hospitality concept proposed for Northland City Center.

The recommendation reflects the Board’s support for a project that aligns with the SDDA’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan by expanding dining and entertainment options, encouraging evening and weekend activity, supporting private investment, and contributing to the continued redevelopment of the Cornerstone District.

What is a Development Liquor License?
A Development Liquor License is a state-issued Class C liquor license designed to encourage redevelopment and economic investment. Unlike quota liquor licenses, Development Liquor Licenses are tied to a specific location and are intended to help attract businesses that enhance a community’s dining, entertainment, and recreation offerings while supporting long-term redevelopment goals.

What Happens Next?
The SDDA Board’s action is an advisory recommendation and one step in the Development Liquor License process. Next, the applicant will complete the City’s Development Liquor License application and local review process, including approvals required by City staff and the Chief of Police. The request will then be presented to the Southfield City Council for consideration. If approved by City Council, the application will be forwarded to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission (MLCC), which makes the final decision on issuing the license.
The SDDA appreciates Brix Wine’s investment in Northland City Center and looks forward to the continued progress of the project.
